The philosophy behind GNU can be read, at great length, on www.gnu.org, but it can be summarised as a concern for the freedom of software and the avoidance of restricting copyrights.
Now, building on the success of the various GNU tools that support systems such as Linux, the GNU community is looking to build additional educational tools. And one of them is an Internet-based encyclopaedia.
Check out this URL for the announcement of the project by Richard Stallman (the originator of GNU) and see www.gnu.org/encyclopedia/ for details of the mailing lists, if you want to take part.
Of course, Encarta and Britannica are already online and free, so the GNU bods will have their work cut out establishing GNUPedia with any force.
