Price Check: DVD burners 2:13PM, Friday 12th March 2004
We were quite impressed when we last looked at DVD burner prices back in September that they had broken through the £100 barrier. Six months later... prepare to be impressed all over again.

September's bet price for a DVD was the Lite-On LDW-401S: a +RW burner for a piffling £97.18. Today, however, the cheapest we found was for £61.71. Better still it's a +/- burner too. The NEC ND-1300A DVD+/-RW can be bought from ebuyer.

The only thing it hasn't got

going for it is speed. So if you've got to have 8x rather than 4x write performance then you'll need one of the newer models.

The NEC ND-2500 DVD+/-RW can write at 8x to both +R and -R discs and costs £79.62 from Scan.co.uk.

If you don't fancy fiddling about under the bonnet to fit an internal drive, then a 4x external drive worth considering might be the Lite-On LDW-411SX from Amazon for £119.99.

An 8x (writing to +R discs) version, the Lite-On LDW-851SX-02C, is available from ITWebBuy for £127.32.

The Firewire-ready Freecom FX-50 costs a bit more, at £184.87 from dabs.com.
