Maxell unveils “world-first” external SSD drive 10:07AM, Friday 28th November 2008
Maxell has unveiled what it claims is the first external solid state drive (SSD) to offer both USB connectivity and the emerging—and much faster—eSata standard.

The 32GB drive, which resembles the ubiquitous USB flash drive, can read data at 24MB/sec and write at 16MB/sec, which compares favourably to the respective 18MB/sec and 8Mb/sec speeds of a standard flash drive.

But connect it over eSata and the performance soars—reading at 75MB/sec and reading at 25MB/sec.

“SSD is the revolutionary means of storing data, essential for those who have ever experienced the stress and frustration of a slow, damaged or broken USB, or for those who are merely dedicated admirers of state-of-the-art technology,” Maxell says. “If you are looking for the most reliable, rapid and robust portable storage device, this SDD is unquestionably for you.”

The drive will be available in mid–to–late December for €120.
